Stuart Herd

Stuart Herd is inspired by the varied and dramatically changing landscape of his country – Scotland. Born in Scotland in 1971 he grew up in England, briefly attending Amersham College of Art before starting a career in photography in the South East whilst regularly travelling north to Scotland to explore and capture the landscapes. His photographic career was varied, from Studio and Commercial photography to Press and Lab work around the UK, combined with working as a photographer on board cruise ships and ‘character making’ independent solo trips worldwide. His Art Career took over when in the mid 90s he moved to Edinburgh producing highly detailed Pen & Ink cityscapes and scenes which Galleries started showing. At this time he also started his Stadium portfolio, which now showcases over 30 sporting arenas across Europe. Over the next 3 years he worked as an Art Auctioneer in all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica, then as a Picture Framer, whilst painting and drawing - receiving acclaim from the public and critics alike for his Pen & Ink exhibitions on the island. Looking for a new direction, in 2002 he again returned to Scotland where his painting took precedence. He started exhibiting in Argyll galleries whilst working as a Picture Framer, but within a few years he was working full time on his paintings. In 2011 he accidentally punctured one of his eyes with a screwdriver and despite several operations is now blind in that eye. Remarkably, almost a year later he is back producing the same amount of detailed work as prior to the accident, supplying Galleries and undertaking commissions for both private and corporate clients. Married with a young son, Stuart enjoys taking off on sketching and photographic trips with his family, both across Scotland and further afield, each time coming home with more ideas and inspiration.
